Leonard Zubkoff

I met Leonard in 1989 or 1990, at a party of the local (San Francisco Bay Area) science-fiction group. We started talking and soon realized we both had a strong interest in music, especially but not limited to folk music. Our back-and-forth "Have you heard So-and-so" and "Have you heard the latest by Whoever" turned into a once-a-month get-together where we brought our favourite cassettes and records to play selections for each other, introducing each other to new artists and new works.

I never knew stereo speakers could look like that.

Leonard would fix dinner. I remember him rolling out homemade pizza dough on his marble countertop using his cylindrical marble rolling pin. It was good pizza, although Leonard could never be persuaded to put a mushroom or a green pepper on it.

After some years the demands of work, new jobs, and increased responsibilities didn't give us the time to do this any more. So we always made sure to make time at conventions to sit down and have an hour or two of intense chat to get caught up on what was happening in each other's lives.

Leonard, you enriched my life by introducing me to the work of people like Fred Small. I hope I was able to return the favour by introducing you to the work of people like Heather Alexander.
